Pronunciation training improves the listener’s understanding and reduces the speaker’s frustration. Speakers learn proper Standard American English pronunciation, more natural speech rhythm, voice inflection, and cadence.
The training typically produces improved speaking confidence, deeper social connections and increased sense of belonging. In the workplace, it can lead to
improved customer and employer satisfaction, and increased effectiveness and performance ratings, therefore creating increased professional value. When communication improves in the workplace, relationships and rapport often improve between co-workers, as well as between employees and customers or clients.
Improvement can be objectively measured using before-and-after pronunciation analyses. Trainees and employers can receive detailed feedback regarding the number and type of pronunciation errors and a report detailing improvement statistics at the end of the course. With full participation and consistent practice, most clients achieve at least a 50% improvement. Improvement of 70-80% with consistent practice is not uncommon.
Improvement is directly related to full participation in the training and consistent practice. Therefore, responsibility for improvement belongs to the trainee. However, within 30 days of completing the program, if a client is unsatisfied with the course after having fully participated in the training and completed homework and consistent practice, the client will be allowed to repeat the course or his or her tuition will be refunded.
Each trainee provides a speech sample which is analyzed to determine their specific pronunciation errors. Participants are taught to identify and hear the differences between their speech errors and proper Standard American English pronunciation. Then they are systematically taught to produce the specific sounds that are challenging for them. Pronunciation is taught on a hierarchy by working at the sound level first, and then progressing to the word, sentence and conversational levels. The curriculum also includes critical training in voice inflection and intonation and speech rhythm and cadence.
